I have 30 years experience in the national and corporate intelligence and security sectors in South Africa. In this time, I was an intelligence analyst, an analysis trainer, a professional development consultant, an entrepreneur and a manager of a team of analysts.
My academic background is in international relations and politics, as well as the information and knowledge management fields. Some of the best fun I had in these 30 years, was when I ran my own company, 4Knowledge Analysis Solutions, an intelligence training and consulting company with an amazing team of experts. We ran courses throughout Africa and I published the popular e-magazine Foreknowledge.
Well, they say life's seasons come in 7 year intervals, so I closed down the business in 2013, and started a new career in the private sector when I was asked to set up a new analysis unit.
I had the opportunity to implement best (or good enough) practices and learnt some valuable lessons on the way! I recruited and mentored new analysts and had my battles and victories with the C-suite.
Now, 5 years later, my unit is going strong and I can move on - this time into the wider security risk field - where intelligence analysis is still a critical part to understand the threat we are facing and implement risk measures to counter it.
My passion remains how to make intelligence analysis, in all its forms, relevant and better for decision-making - this time in the private sector. My doctoral studies at the University of Portsmouth in the UK will help me to achieve this.
